The similarities and differences between gear pumps and asphalt pumps

Gear pumps and asphalt pumps are common fluid conveying equipment, but there are significant differences in design, application, and characteristics. Here are their similarities and main differences:

Similarities

1. Working principle:

Gear pumps and asphalt pumps both belong to positive displacement pumps, which achieve fluid transport through changes in the volume of a closed chamber.   

Gear pumps drive fluid through gear meshing; Asphalt pumps typically use gear, screw, or special rotor structures, but the core principles are similar.   

2. Simple structure:

Both have fewer moving parts and are relatively easy to maintain.   

3. Suitable for viscous media:

Both can handle high viscosity fluids (such as gear pumps for lubricating oil and asphalt pumps designed specifically for high-temperature asphalt).   

Main differences

Gear pump: universal type, suitable for various fluids (oil, chemicals, etc.), usually made of cast iron or stainless steel, with limited temperature resistance (≤ 200 ℃), standard sealing, and no insulation design.

Asphalt pump: specially designed for high-temperature and high viscosity asphalt optimization, with high-temperature resistant materials (such as alloy steel), insulation/heating structures (able to withstand above 300 ℃), heating jacket/tracing system|

Summary of Key Differences

Asphalt pump is a "special version" of gear pump: based on gear pump, it has strengthened high temperature resistance, anti solidification and sealing performance.   

Adaptability: Gear pumps have a wide range of applications, while asphalt pumps are only suitable for special media such as asphalt.   

Heating requirements: Asphalt pumps must be equipped with heating/insulation functions to prevent low-temperature solidification; Gear pumps usually do not require heating (unless under special operating conditions).   

Suggestion for selection:

Transporting ordinary oils or low corrosive fluids - gear pump;   

Transport high-temperature asphalt or easily solidified high viscosity media → specialized asphalt pump.
