Guide to using gear pump

The following is a detailed tutorial on the use of gear pumps, covering installation, operation, maintenance, and common problem handling, to help you use gear pumps correctly and extend their lifespan:

1、 Basic understanding of gear pumps

1. Working principle:

By rotating two meshing gears, a sealed chamber volume change is formed to achieve liquid suction and discharge.

2. Main applications:

Hydraulic system, fuel delivery, lubricating oil circulation, chemical medium delivery, etc.

2、 Installation steps

1. Choose the installation location

Ensure that the pump is close to the liquid source and reduce the length of the suction pipe.   

Environmental temperature, vibration, and ease of maintenance need to be considered comprehensively.

2. Connect the pipeline

Suction pipe: Keep it as short and straight as possible, with a diameter equal to or greater than the pump inlet diameter, to avoid bending and causing cavitation.   

Discharge pipe: Install pressure gauge and safety valve (recommended setting pressure ≤ 1.1 times the rated pressure of the pump).   

When using hoses or flanges for connection, ensure that the seal is leak free.

3. Motor alignment

Couplings or belt drives must be strictly aligned with a deviation of ≤ 0.1mm.

Confirm that the manual turning mechanism rotates smoothly without any jamming.

4. Steering confirmation

Tap the motor and check that the direction of rotation is consistent with the direction indicated on the pump body (usually clockwise).

3、 Start and Run

1. Preparation before initial startup

Pump filling: Fill the pump chamber with liquid to avoid dry running and damaging the seal.   

Check the oil level (if the pump is equipped with a lubrication system).

2. Startup steps

Fully open the inlet valve and close the outlet valve (to reduce the starting load).   

Start the motor and slowly open the outlet valve to the desired flow rate.   

Observe the pressure gauge: stabilize within the rated range (stop immediately if abnormal).

3. Operation monitoring

Noise/vibration: Abnormalities may indicate cavitation, bearing wear, or gear damage.   

Temperature: The temperature at the bearing location is ≤ 70 ℃.   

Leakage: Slight leakage is allowed at the shaft seal (dripping ≤ 1 drop/minute), but a large amount of leakage requires shutdown.

4、 Daily maintenance

1. Regular inspection

Daily: pressure, noise, leakage, temperature.   

Monthly: Tighten bolts and align couplings.   

2. Lubrication management

Lubricating grease for bearings should be replenished every 3-6 months (refer to the manufacturer's manual).   

If lubrication is needed in the gear chamber, replace the oil regularly.

3. Seal replacement

When the leakage of the mechanical seal increases, stop the machine and replace it (pay attention to protecting the sealing surface).

4. Long term discontinuation

Drain the liquid from the pump, rinse and inject rust proof oil.   

Manual turning once a month to prevent jamming.

5、 Safety precautions

1. It is strictly prohibited to run dry (without any medium).   

When transporting flammable media, explosion-proof measures must be taken on site.   

3. Cut off the power and release the pressure before maintenance.   

4. Chemical medium pumps need to be operated with protective equipment.

7、 Selection and adaptation suggestions

Medium characteristics: Stainless steel or fluoroplastic material gear pump is selected for corrosive media.   

Viscosity range: High viscosity liquids require heating or the use of low-speed large modulus gear pumps.   

Traffic demand: Actual traffic=theoretical traffic x volumetric efficiency (usually 80%~90%).

Following the above steps for operation and maintenance can significantly improve the reliability and service life of the gear pump. When encountering complex problems, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or professional technical personnel.
