不锈钢齿轮泵按啮合方式分有外(啮合式)齿轮泵和内(啮合式)齿轮泵两类。以外啮合式齿轮泵为例，在泵壳中装有一对相同且互相啮合的齿轮。其中被原动机带动回转的齿轮称为主动齿轮，它与主动轴之间用键连接；被主动齿轮带动回转的齿轮称为从动齿轮，它与从动轴之间或用键连接或滑套在从动轴上。主动轴与从动轴互相平行。主、从动齿轮分别被泵壳和泵的前后端盖所包围，形成密封空间。与吸入口相通的吸入腔和与排出口相通的排出腔由啮合的轮齿隔离。
